An original Bollywood song has a first to its name on Spotify

Kabir Singh’s ‘Bekhayali’ is top of Spotify’s Global Viral 50 charts

The world loves Bekhayali. If Spotify’s Global Viral Top 50 chart is anything to go by, this latest song from the upcoming Bollywood movie Kabir Singh starring Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani is all the rage worldwide.

Sachet-Parampara

Bekhayali sung by Sachet Tandon and composed by Sachet-Parampara, has surpassed global artists such as J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Tyga, and Lil Nas X among others to reach the number 1 spot on the playlist.

A small disclaimer here. If you’re a Spotify Global account user (or are accessing Spotify via desktop), Bekhayali will show at #2. The reason, we can gauge, is because the track on, let’s say a Canada account, at #1 is Blanco Brown’s The Git Up. The reason this song doesn’t feature on a Spotify India account is because Spotify has yet to crack a deal for India with Blanco’s label. In any case, Bekhayali being so high on the Global Viral 50 on Spotify is still a massive deal.

Kabir Singh co-producer Ashwin Varde sums it up pretty well when he says, “It’s heartening to know that an Indian song has topped the charts like this. This proves that music really has no boundaries. Music has a universal reach. Bekhayali has touched a chord with people like no other song.”

When asked to comment on the success of the track, co-producer Bhushan Kumar said, “When a Hindi song trends on a global chart, it gives us confidence that we are creating the right kind of music. Bekhayali has got an universal appeal cause of the rawness that comes from Sachet’s voice, passionate tune and lyrics. It broke records the day it released. Topping Global Viral 50 charts on Spotify is encouraging.”

Sachet Tandon, who sang the song and is one half of the composer duo Sachet-Parampara, says, “It’s massive for us. A creation which was made within the four walls of our studio is now reaching all music lovers globally. It’s the most special feeling when your work gets noticed and is appreciated by not just people of our country but worldwide as well. We’ve had a great team with us who have supported us and our creatives and music ideas including the director, producers and the music label T-Series. Big thank you to all listeners and people who’ve made this song go global.”

Bekhayali had 7 lakh+ streams on Spotify India within a week of its launch, and has won the hearts of Spotify users worldwide now.

Amarjit Singh Batra, Managing Director India, Spotify explained the journey of the song on the charts, “Global Viral 50 is one of Spotify’s most popular algorithmic playlists that updates once a day, based on songs users across the world are not only streaming, but also sharing. It’s pretty cool for us to see an Indian song rule a much coveted global viral chart. When we launched here, we talked about how we not only want to bring international artists to Indian audiences, but focus more on taking Indian artists to an international audience of what is today 217 million active users. Recently, we shared an insight around how India is the only country for Spotify, where ‘Love’ pops up as a mood when users want to listen to music late evenings; this track aligns to that trend, and also becomes a case in point for discovery for our international users.”
